MATATU CULTURE: Kasa VS Everybody
A brief history of Kasarani… Before the Thika super highway was completed, Kasarani had the worst matatus second to Ngumo whose Nissans were so worn out you were at a risk of getting tetanus if you ever boarded them. The green “MWI SACCO’’ buses ruled the streets of Kasa. Then came the “MSL operators’’ and ‘’Hannover Trans’’ buses which at least gave life to the route with few of them having good music systems and off-cut rims. This was the beginning of the rise of Kasarani aka Kasar-unit.
Meanwhile, the O.G routes like Kayole, Buru and Easich were keenly watching these noisy new kids trying to find their way into the culture that they had started. Then sacco uniforms began slowly fading away giving way to the art and creativity of the Kenyan matatu culture. Formation of the Expresso sacco made way for the entry of souped up matatus into Kasarani, lately with entry of the ‘DRUNKEN MASTER aka NDOGOGIO’
The first matatu with screens on every seat for the route, these ninjas from Kasa have been busy trash talking all the other hoods with the exception of RONGA which they obviously can’t match. By the words of @Tunji254, ‘’ Mat za ronga ni ziii ’’. Some routes had screens on every seat ten years ago when many of you Kasa peeps were still taking naps in the afternoon in nursery school.
Kasarani has been the receiver of matatus which found it difficult to operate in other routes like the simplistic but unique Rockford fosgate from Umoja yet they are busy challenging other established routes. Ngong aka Hong Ngong which released 3 hot new nganyaz the last 2 months alone (Oldskool, Transformers& Raiders)
has been receiving a lot of hate from a hood which had nothing in the past two years. Humble by Kendrick Lamar would be a great track for them to listen to but that’s talk for another day.
In this great and unique culture, hood rep is all that matters. Ronga, Emba and Ngong boast of matatus from various fabrictors e.g CHODA, DODI, KCI, CFG etc. Kasa is mainly made up of buses from KCI which are basically plain in design like most school buses.
My word to kasa is, big up for coming of age in the matatu culture but you need way more than what you have to match up to the other established routes. You have less than 10 nganyas, I know this is exciting for a hood like yours but don’t YaP and talk smack about your fathers like Emba, Ngong and Ronga. That is advice from the O.G’s. Otherwise keep them coming and we will keep shutting you down.
