DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Kenyan Men Under Threat

Domestic violence can be defined as the violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner. This has been a case heard of for quite a long period of time. However, domestic violence is no longer confined to the female gender.

Not long ago, when the term domestic violence was mentioned anywhere, almost everyone knew that between the two parties involved, one of them was obviously a lady who had been beaten to pulp. If a reader came across the story on a page in the local dailies, he/she flipped to the next page without taking a fleeting glance at the story.

It’s not the same story anymore. The male gender is now bearing the brunt of domestic violence and this new trend has taken a turn for the worst. The main reason why domestic violence is no longer confined to the female gender is because of the many activists voices clamoring for the end of domestic violence against the female gender. This clamor has had a great impact and its benefits are still there to be seen but has left the male gender exposed.

Another reason is due to the sheer courage exhibited these days by the womenfolk. They take on men without battling an eyelid! Many men have been hospitalized after being attacked by their wives and a few lucky ones have succumbed to their serious injuries. The infamous Nyeri transformer choppers saga best sums up this situation.

The other reason may be due to the formation of organizations and movements to fight for men’s rights. Effectiveness of this organizations is hindered by the stigma associated with male violence. An example of this organizations is Maendeleo ya Wanaume Organization headed by a vibrant Nderitu Njoka. A lot of attention has been focused on support of the female gender thus the neglect of the male gender and hence the formation of these female groups. I hope sanity will prevail to end this domestic violence on both male and female gender.
